Computer Science Meets Ecology (Dagstuhl Seminar 17091)

Authors: Gustau Camps-Valls, Thomas Hickler, and Birgitta König-Ries

Published in: Dagstuhl Reports, Volume 7, Issue 2 (2017)

Abstract
This report summarizes the program and main outcomes of the Dagstuhl Seminar 17091 entitled ``Computer Science Meets Ecolog''. Ecology is a discipline that poses many challenging problems involving big data collection, provenance and integration, as well as difficulties in data analysis, prediction and understanding. All these issues are precisely the arena where computer science is concerned. The seminar motivation was rooted in the belief that ecology could largely benefit from modern computer science. The seminar attracted scientists from both fields who discussed important topics in ecology (e.g. botany, animal science, biogeochemistry) and how to approach them with machine learning, computer vision, pattern recognition and data mining. A set of specific problems and techniques were treated, and the main building blocks were set up. The important topics of education, outreach, data and models accessibility were also touched upon. The seminar proposed a distinctive perspective by promoting cross-fertilization in a unique environment and a unique set of individuals.

08421 Working Group: Lineage/Provenance

Authors: Anish Das Sarma, Amol Deshpande, Thomas Hubauer, Ihab F. Ilyas, Birgitta König-Ries, Matthias Renz, and Martin Theobald

Published in: Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings, Volume 8421, Uncertainty Management in Information Systems (2009)

Abstract
The following summary tries to capture a collection of state-of-the-art techniques and challenges for future work on lineage management in uncertain and probabilistic databases that we discussed in our working group. It was one half of a larger committee that we had initially formed, which then got split into two groups---one focusing on lineage as a means of explanation of data, and one focusing more on lineage usage in probabilistic databases (see also the "Explanation" working group report for more details on the first subgroup).

08421 Working Group: Uncertainty and Trust

Authors: Hidir Aras, Clemens Beckstein, Sonja Buchegger, Peter Dittrich, Thomas Hubauer, Friederike Klan, Birgitta König-Ries, and Wolfson. Ouri

Published in: Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings, Volume 8421, Uncertainty Management in Information Systems (2009)

Abstract
This report summarizes the findings of a working group on "Uncertainty and Trust" which met during Dagstuhl Seminar 08421 "Uncertainty Management in Information Systems". All participants of the working group are co-authors of this report. The aim of the working group was to analyse the relationship between trust and uncertainty in distributed reputation systems. We started by identifying sources and types of uncertainty in this context and investigated their relation to trust. After that we compiled a list of desirable properties of trust representations and finally determined open research challenges in the area.

06431 Working Group Summary: P2P, Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks – All the Different or All the Same?

Authors: Peter A. Boncz, Angela Bonifati, Joos-Hendrik Böse, Stefan Böttcher, Panos Kypros Chrysanthis, Le Gruenwald, Arantza Illarramendi, Peter Janacik, Birgitta König-Ries, Wolfgang May, Anirban Mondal, Sebastian Obermeier, Aris Ouksel, and George Samaras

Published in: Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings, Volume 6431, Scalable Data Management in Evolving Networks (2007)

Abstract
Currently, data management technologies are in the process of finding their way into evolving networks, i.e. P2P, ad hoc and wireless sensor networks. We examine the properties, differences and commonalities of the different types of evolving networks, in order to enable the development of adequate technologies suiting their characteristics. We start with presenting definitions for the different network types, before arranging them in a network hierarchy, to gain a clear view of the area. Then, we analyze and compare the example applications for each of the types using different design dimensions. Based on this work, we finally present a comparison of P2P, ad hoc and wireless sensor networks.

04441 Executive Summary – Mobile Information Management

Authors: Margaret H. Dunham, Birgitta König-Ries, Evaggelia Pitoura, Peter Reiher, and Can Türker

Published in: Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings, Volume 4441, Mobile Information Management (2005)

Abstract
From October, 25th until 29th , 2004, a Dagstuhl seminar on mobile information management took place. The seminar was attended by 34 researchers from Europe and North America with backgrounds ranging from database systems, mobile information systems, geographic information systems and business informatics to wireless networks and security. The goal of the seminar was to bring together researchers, especially from the area of databases and information systems, to identify open problems and new challenges in data, service, and user management in mobile information processing environments. We are particulary interested to provide a forum for discussing the consequences of the mobility of users and devices on today's and future data management systems. The first aim of this discussions was to clearly identify these consequences. The second and more challenging aim was to determinate where existing solutions can be applied, where mobility raise truly new challenges, and which of these challenges are there to last.

04441 Working Group – Business Models

Authors: Birgitta König-Ries, Franz Lehner, Rainer Malaka, Florian Matthes, Philipp Obreiter, Key Pousttchi, Frank Seliger, Klaus Turowski, and Jari Veijalainen

Published in: Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings, Volume 4441, Mobile Information Management (2005)

Abstract
This document presents the results from the working group "Business Models" (WG 1) discussing the seminar topic under market aspects. Main objectives were developing a shared view of the field (i.e. matching business, technology and research interests), identifying key players and relations between them (including barriers and lessons learned so far from the 2G/2.5G market), discussing the role of business models and value chains and applying them to P2P-networks. In the concluding round the difference between traditional DB/IS applications and mobile applications is explored.
